Synthetic VS Emulated Drivers

I mentioned in my previous post that there are 2 types of drivers / devices that Hyper-v supports

  • Synthetic drivers / devices
  • Emulated devices

And I also mentioned that administrators can get best through put when using synthetic drivers because there is no context switch occurs.

There are no separate drivers built for synthetic support, but there is an OS requirement need to be fulfilled. Virtual Machines can take advantage of VMBus only when they install Integrated Services  and if you do not install this service, then your VM’s fall back to use Emulated drivers.

 Hope this helps J
